Beale Street was in mourning Sunday over the loss of one of its familiar faces, a man who spent nearly 20 years of his life working there.

Jay Uiberall, who had a hand in two Beale restaurants as well as nearby Automatic Slim’s, was killed Saturday night after falling from the balcony of his home at Pickwick Lake. He was 37.

“He will be greatly missed on Beale Street. He’ll truly, truly be missed,” said Wilbur Hensley, who owns Club 152 and Blues City Cafe on Beale. “It’s really a sad, tragic thing that’s happened.”

Details of the accident were sketchy, but friends and family said Mr. Uiberall was on the balcony of his home when he fell. His mother Andie said he fell asleep on the balcony.

I didn’t know Jay but I know people who knew him and he will be sorely missed. He started as a waiter then a bartender when he was quite young and moved up quickly to become GM of Alfred’s on Beale Street and became part owner of two other noted restaurants, one of them, the famous Dyer’s Burgers, a burger joint known for deep-frying their burgers in oil that was never changed in over 60 years (they only added oil as it was used up). The other was venerable downtown spot, Automatic Slim’s.

He accomplished much in his short 37 years and our condolences go out to his family and vast extended restaurant family.
